Mingo Beach is named for Robin Mingo, an enslaved person who once lived on the shores of these very sands. From 1661 to 1748, Mingo lived in Beverly and was married to a free indigenous woman named Deborah Tailor.

According to legend, Mingo’s enslaver, Thomas Woodbury, promised Mingo freedom if the tides recessed enough for him to walk from the shore out to a rocky outcropping known as “Becky’s Hedge” or “Aunt Becky’s Ledge”.

In one version of the tale, Mingo completed the challenge and was emancipated, only to later tragically drown. In another, he lived out his days in bondage without ever seeing the rare tidal event.
